Why we built Vocabbies

Teaching kids a new language is hard!

We know you've tried - flashcards at home, language schools on weekends, and calling in the grandparents. But it still feels like an uphill battle. As first generation immigrants, we know the pain of language learning all too well.

Vocabbies helps language learning become a part of your everyday life seamlessly. No commutes, quizzes, or headaches. Just wholesome, whole family learning.

Our story

Meet Cindy

Cindy has more than 10 years of experience building products for kids, from apps to books to toys. She has a Masters in Education from Harvard.

She is a first generation Taiwanese immigrant who loathed Saturday Chinese school. It felt like a special punishment. In her Master's program, she learned about the "learn through play" pedagogy. She has been determined to make language learning joyful ever since.

Cindy's favorite Mandarin word: chi-ku or "eating bitterness". It's a reminder to persevere through hardship with no complaints.

Our story

Meet Christi

Christi is an experienced marketer by day and a passionate language tutor by night, helping others discover the joy of learning new languages and cultures.

Growing up in Canada with Korean immigrant parents, Christi had no escape from speaking Korean at home—her parents didn’t speak any English. As a kid, she often felt embarrassed by the language others didn’t understand. But now, she is deeply grateful to her parents for nurturing her connection to her roots.

Christi's favorite Korean word: “Fighting!”—a fun Korean-English hybrid meaning "have a good fight," used to cheer someone on.
